Are you ready for greater realism, depth and a convincing finish in your paintings? In this course, you will fully develop one painting from start-to-finish, bringing together traditional & contemporary techniques. The live model will hold one sustained pose, allowing for greater focus on form, light and skin tones. Whether focusing on the figure or portrait, your painting will develop in gradual steps: (1) underpainting in imprimatura & grisaille, (2) overpainting in colour with muted skin tones, (3) glazing & blending (4) layering bright skin tones & impasto brushwork. Emphasis will be placed upon accuracy, and capturing the subtle nuances of skin by adjusting colour, edges, value and temperature.

Working from a Jeremy Mann cityscape, you will explore making a variety of chromatic greys with a limited palette, utilizing colour harmonies and how to achieve subtle colour shifts. Emphasis will be placed upon seeing the big picture, foregoing detail, and focusing on composition and large masses. You will also analyze the works of other famous urban painters to understand their approach in creating masterpieces. In the end, you’ll take home your own masterpiece to hang on your wall.

Is it time to bring more depth, nuance, and precision into your portraits? Whether a drawer or painter, this course is essential for the portrait artist. Each class begins with a brief anatomy lecture, followed by drawing from the live model. Using basic drawing media in short and long poses, you will examine the head & facial features from various angles, learning how to draw them into simplified geometrical shapes & planes. Emphasis will be placed upon solidifying structure and proportion, achieving a likeness, and utilizing shading techniques to create convincing, 3-dimensional drawings. Attendees of this course will be able to draw the head from their imagination with ease, and enjoy greater realism in their portraiture!

Learn about linear and atmospheric perspective, how to mix colours to create a harmonious effect of light, and how to paint impressionistic trees, rocks, clouds and more.

Emphasis will be placed on painting folds in fabric, painting different types of fabric (eg. velvet, denim, silk, etc), accurately translating how the clothing and figure interact, and capturing a convincing space that the figure inhabits. In working from both the live model and reference materials, you will create finished portrait paintings in the alla prima technique, starting with a detailed underpainting and then using a ‘tiling’ technique to achieve a complex and nuanced final figure painting.
