In this course, you will learn how to create powerful, dynamic and lifelike portrait paintings by exploring traditional techniques of the Old Masters, as well as contemporary approaches in paint application. In working from both the live model and reference materials, you will create gestural alla prima paintings with exciting brushwork and fresh colour, as well as develop detailed long paintings using step-by-step techniques (imprimatura, grisaille, ‘tiling’ colour, impasto, and glazing). Emphasis will be placed upon accuracy, and capturing the subtle nuances of skin by adjusting colour, edges, value and temperature.

In this class, you will develop the technical skills to create landscape paintings with beautiful and convincing space. Choose to work from either an urban or natural landscape photos, supplied by the teacher, or bring your own. Emphasis will be placed on composition, colour mixing, drawing, and how to paint various types of light and shadow. Learn about linear and atmospheric perspective, how to mix colours to create a harmonious effect of light, and how to paint impressionistic trees, rocks, clouds and more.

In this course, you will learn how to paint realistic clothed figures in space. Emphasis will be placed on painting folds in fabric, painting different types of fabric (eg. velvet, denim, silk, etc), accurately translating how the clothing and figure interact, and capturing a convincing space that the figure inhabits. In working from both the live model and reference materials, you will create finished portrait paintings in the alla prima technique, starting with a detailed underpainting and then using a ‘tiling’ technique to achieve a complex and nuanced final figure painting.

Are you ready to loosen up and get more creative with your figure drawings? This exciting course brings an outside-the-box approach into figure drawing, as you experiment with mark making techniques using various drawing media. In working from photographic sources (personal or found), exercises are designed to stimulate your imagination and yield surprising results. The instructor will guide you along step-by-step, showing you how to integrate techniques with ink (calligraphic brushwork), gouache (layering planes of colour), and water-based marker (expressive line & washes) all in one drawing! Attendees of this course will experience a sense of play, discovery, and creative flow in their work.

Each class begins with how to draw the head with a brush, using a variety of measuring techniques and then moves on to simple methods for painting shadows, half tones and light. Loosen up your style and paint realistic, expressive, and exciting still life paintings. You will develop a deep understanding of traditional techniques, as well as explore contemporary approaches in paint application. Students may choose to paint many small studies or work on larger arrangements for longer periods of time. Topics including drawing, value organization, color, edges, design and paint application will be addressed. You’ll leave the class with a new set of skills to set up and create your own still life masterpieces.

Are you ready for greater realism, depth and a convincing finish in your portrait paintings? In this workshop, you will fully develop one painting from start-to-finish, bringing together traditional & contemporary techniques. The live model will hold one sustained pose, allowing for greater focus on form, light and skin tones. Working in alla prima, your painting will develop in gradual steps (imprimatura, grisaille, ‘tiling’ colour, impasto, and glazing), utilizing exciting brushwork and employing colour harmonies of your choice. Emphasis will be placed upon accuracy, and capturing the subtle nuances of skin by adjusting colour, edges, value and temperature.
