Each class begins with how to draw the head with a brush, using a variety of measuring techniques and then moves on to simple methods for painting shadows, half tones and light. In working from both the live model and reference materials, you will create finished portrait paintings in the alla prima technique, starting with a detailed underpainting and then using a ‘tiling’ technique to achieve a complex and nuanced final portrait painting.

In this exciting course, you will draw from the live model exploring traditional and contemporary techniques in mastering both short and long drawings. Each class begins with a focus on fast gesture drawings, line-of-action, simplified shapes, and spontaneous mark making to capture the essence of the pose. As the poses lengthen, emphasis shifts toward solidifying structure and proportion with techniques in sighting & measuring, planar construction, and volume. In the final ‘long pose’ of each class, you will work on mid-tone paper focusing on the subtle nuances of light and shade, to create a 3-dimensional, dynamic, and realistic figure drawing. Using the drawing mediums of your choice, you will enjoy heightened confidence, ease, and flow in your figure drawing!

This workshop is foundational for all...
This workshop is foundational for all figurative painters, providing a tangible step-by-step system on how to create realistic skin tones, and apply them with ease to the portrait. Basic colour theory is utilized to pre-mix palettes for different skin types and lighting situations. Emphasis is placed upon ‘tiling’ colours next to each other (darks, half-tones, lights) in a mosaic-like manner, and then refining edges to depict lifelike 3-dimensional form. In working from well-lit reference materials, you will be able to isolate specific skin tones, and match the colour, value, saturation, and temperature with great ease. By the weekend’s end, you will have a finished portrait, and newfound confidence in adjusting colour while applying paint, all in one stroke!
