Are you ready for greater realism ...
Are you ready for greater realism, depth and a convincing finish in your figurative paintings? In this weekend workshop, you will fully develop one painting from start-to-finish, bringing together traditional & contemporary techniques.

The live model will hold one sustained pose, allowing for greater focus on form, light and skin tones. Working in alla prima, your painting will develop in gradual steps (imprimatura, block-in, ‘tiling’ colour, impasto, and composition), utilizing exciting brushwork, blending, and colour harmonies.

Emphasis will be placed upon accuracy, and capturing the subtle nuances of skin by adjusting colour, edges, value and temperature. Whether focusing on the whole figure or the portrait, attendees of this course will acquire greater confidence, ease and depth in their paintings.

In this essential course, you will draw from the live model exploring classical and contemporary techniques to create powerful, dynamic, and realistic drawings.

Each class begins with a focus on fast gestural drawings, utilizing line-of-action, simplified shapes, and expressive mark-making to capture the essence of the pose.

As the poses lengthen, emphasis shifts toward accuracy, structure and proportion using sighting & measuring techniques, basic anatomy, and planar construction. In the long poses, you will work on mid-tone paper focusing on the subtle nuances of light and shade to create 3-dimensional, lifelike figure drawings.

Attendees of this course will enjoy heightened confidence, ease, and flow in their drawing!

In this workshop ...
In this workshop, you will learn how to paint believable and impressionistic flowers, using exciting brushwork and vibrant colours. You will practice drawing flowers of different shapes and how to identify the colour, value and edges of flower petals and stems.

Instructor Steve will also teach how to paint glass and ceramic vases, so you’ll be ready for any setup. You will paint flowers from life, in one long painting held over the weekend. Steve will spend time with each student one-on-one, while demonstrating various techniques on his own painting.

You will also analyze the works of famous floral painters to understand their approach in creating masterpieces. In the end, you’ll take home your own masterpiece to hang on your wall.

In this workshop, you will learn how to paint realistic and expressive portraits. Develop your skills in mixing life-like skin tones, creating glowing light effects, and achieving accurate proportions of the face.

Each class begins with how to draw the head with a brush, using a variety of measuring techniques and then moves on to simple methods for painting shadows, half tones and light.

In working from both the live model and reference materials, you will create finished portrait paintings in the alla prima technique, starting with a detailed underpainting and then using a ‘tiling’ technique to achieve a complex and nuanced final portrait painting.
